Creator of Strawberry Shortcake!
We are so berry excited! The brilliant artistic mind behind the Strawberry Shortcake phenomenon is coming to Denver Retro Con to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Kenner's 1979 release of the first Strawberry Shortcake dolls! Muriel Fahrion lives in Tulsa, and is still a creative force to be reckoned with! She began drawing at the age of 4, and attended free classes at the Cleveland Museum of Art as a child. After attending Lourdes Academy in Cleveland, she earned a scholarship to Cooper School of Art in Cleveland, graduating with a major in illustration. She was immediately hired by American Greetings as a greeting card designer, working in Juvenile & Humorous Planning, where she created cute, whimsical and humorous illustrations.
In 1977, Muriel was asked to come up with a rag doll character with strawberry and daisy theme in colors of pink and green for a greeting card series. It was then Fahrion created the original graphic and color depiction for Strawberry Shortcake, her cat Custard along with Blueberry Muffin and Huckleberry Pie. The rest is history. Moving to TCFC (Those Characters From Cleveland) in 1978 Fahrion continued on the Shortcake line eventually depicting 32 characters. Her sister crafted the first Strawberry Shortcake doll based on Muriel's original greeting card design. The line was launched in the winter of 1979 and 1980, and just two years later, Strawberry Shortcake had blossomed into an entire selection of books, clothing, dolls, toy accessories, and home decor.
Muriel also created designs for The Get Along Gang, Care Bears and Puffalumps, among others. Today, she still creates characters at her Outta Thin Air Studio in Tulsa. Muriel will be at Denver Retro Con all day meeting fans, signing and selling prints. She will take the stage at 2:00 pm for a fun talk and slide show about her adventures with Strawberry Shortcake!
